Have you ever heard of the 72 hour rule? It implies that the longer you put something off the less likely it is that you’ll do it. It doesn’t mean that you have to drop everything and focus on that one thing, but it is generally a good idea to take action and schedule the next steps. When you postpone something for more than 72 hours you’ve usually found other distractions or given up on the idea.
So where am I going with this? I met Yeshe, the founder of The Midnight Baker, on a rainy morning in March. We had a quick chat and I casually mentioned the idea of hosting a workshop at her cafe. To my surprise and delight she was immediately on board. I left feeling exuberant and telling myself I have 72 hours to put the wheels in motion.
On April 27, 2017 we hosted the first Ladies Drawing Night AKL. I wanted to create a place where you felt free to make art and not be hard on yourself. Experiment. Fail. Keep experimenting. I decided to provide paper for each event so you don’t feel too precious about materials and enjoy loosening up with your work. A blank piece of paper can be a very intimidating place. Drawing nights are about letting go of the pressure to create something “perfect”. It’s an exercise that helps you surrender control, build on other artists’ drawings and make work that brings multiple styles onto one page.
Even if you fail to create something during a drawing night session you might become inspired with what someone else is doing. You might learn about a new book or show or podcast, someone’s favourite artist or band. You might try a new pen or pencil or a new brush that will inspire you to create something.
I am so thankful for all the ladies who jumped into this with me and joined me for the first night of Ladies Drawing Night AKL. Everyone was so open and eager to meet other artists. I really enjoyed the company of 12 amazing women sharing their thoughts on books, films, parenting and life. I hope to see you there next time!
